Amazon or Flipkart First? A Marketplace Launch Plan for New D2C Brands

Pexeta Team · 14 October 2026 · 7 min read

New D2C brands are often told to "be everywhere". In practice, a small team that launches on five marketplaces at once usually does all five badly: thin listings, scattered ad budgets and stock-outs on the channel that's actually working. A better approach is to win one marketplace, then expand.

Why we usually start with Amazon

  • Search-led buying: shoppers arrive with intent, which suits new brands that can't yet rely on recognition.
  • Mature ad tools: Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and detailed reporting make it easier to learn what works quickly.
  • Brand tools: Brand Registry, A+ content and Brand Stores help a new brand look established.
  • Data you can reuse: the search terms and conversion data you learn carry over to other channels.

When Flipkart should come first

Flipkart can be the better first channel in some situations:

  • Your category is especially strong on Flipkart, as fashion, mobile accessories and some home categories can be.
  • Your price point is value-focused, and your audience skews towards smaller cities.
  • You can get category or account-management support from Flipkart for your launch.
Look at where your competitors actually sell. Search your main keywords on both platforms and compare the number of sellers, reviews and price points. Data beats general advice.

A practical expansion sequence

  1. Months 0–3: one anchor marketplace. Build complete listings, reviews and a profitable ads structure.
  2. Months 3–6: second marketplace. Reuse your content and keyword learnings; start with your top 10–20 SKUs.
  3. Months 6+: specialist marketplaces. Myntra for fashion and beauty, FirstCry for baby and kids, Nykaa for beauty, where your category fits.
  4. When you have repeat-purchase products: quick commerce on Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart. See our quick-commerce guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to sell on Amazon or Flipkart in India?+

It depends on your category, price point and audience. Many brands start on Amazon for its search-led traffic and ad tools, but Flipkart can be the better first channel in categories where it's especially strong.

Can I sell the same products on Amazon and Flipkart?+

Yes. Most brands do. Keep pricing consistent or intentionally different, and manage stock so one channel doesn't run out because of the other.

When should a D2C brand start on quick commerce?+

Usually once you have proven, repeat-purchase products and the stock and margins to support platform terms and ads.
